Giving your support to food banks

If you’re encouraging people to give to local food banks, it’s worth bearing in mind the following advice…

Don’t forget..

  • The staples – things like tinned vegetables and tinned meat
  • Things that don’t need cooking – if people are struggling to pay their bills they will appreciate food and meals that can be enjoyed without turning the oven on. Think Pot Noodle-style snacks and porridge pots that just need hot water.
  • Personal stuff – we all need soap, shower gel, shampoo and deodorant – and possibly sanitary products too…
  • Pet food – nobody wants to abandon their pets in times of crisis
  • Money – giving money directly to the food bank allows them to buy in bulk and make the money go further

But perhaps most importantly, ask the food banks what they most need at any given time.
