Employer Supported Volunteering explained

Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV), sometimes known as corporate volunteering, is where employees can enjoy paid time off – usually during working hours – to volunteer and support local charities. It’s a win-win for everyone, as we explain here…

The benefits for employers

  • It helps motivate staff and build morale as well as increase loyalty and retention
  • It raises your organisation’s profile
  • It can enhance your recruitment process as it’s an additional benefit to potential employees
  • It builds awareness of skills and provides professional development opportunities
  • It contributes towards your corporate responsibility or environmental, social and governance strategy
  • It can increase communication and understanding among teams

The benefits for staff

  • They can develop skills and make friends
  • They can find purpose and fulfilment
  • They can contribute to many different causes
  • They can strengthen their connection with Kent communities

The benefits to volunteer-involving groups

  • They can benefit from the work of energetic volunteers and their specialised skills
  • They can gain diverse perspectives on community issues
  • They can expand their support networks
  • They can increase volunteer capacity and help more people in more ways

Some examples of ESV opportunities include ‘micro volunteering’ tasks such as giving a careers talk in a school, hosting an interview skills workshop, or taking part in a team event such as a litter pick or a fundraising challenge. ESV also provides longer-term opportunities, which often have more value to both the individual and volunteer-involving organisations. These may involve the staff member offering their professional skills. For example, a finance professional may give advice to a charity on budgeting, or an IT professional may advise on cyber-security measures. It is also possible for employees to use their skills as charity trustees or school governors.
